The Road Again

Marcus liked his steaks rare, his eggs runny and his women blowsy.
“Are we there yet?” Little M squealed from the back seat, clouds pursuing ash-grey from the west.
Marcus lifted the turn-signal lever and shifted into the exit lane, then took some weight off the accelerator. For a moment he still wished he smoked so he could pinch the butt between his middle finger and thumb, flick it out and roll up the window. The engine coughed.
“We’ve always been there,” he said.
